Mumbai Woman Duped of ₹2.47 Lakh in Sophisticated Cyber Fraud

A 61-year-old retired bank officer from Anushakti Nagar, Mumbai, was defrauded of ₹2,47,367 on January 18, 2026, after clicking on a malicious link sent via WhatsApp claiming to be from her gas company. The victim promptly filed a complaint at the Trombay Police Station.

The victim received a message about a pending gas bill and contacted the number provided. She was instructed to click a link, leading her to enter her bank details and attempt a payment. Despite error messages, the fraudster persisted, and multiple unauthorized transactions occurred. The victim reported the incident to the cybercrime helpline and her bank, but the funds had already been transferred to unknown accounts. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
